Gaming Industry in May: MW II, New Witcher Game, or Record Profits

The month of May took place in a similar spirit as the previous months, so that a substantial part of the team works on long-term projects for several of our clients. We have started a couple of new cooperations in May. In the first one, we are preparing 3D assets of clothing and props from Roman times for our client. The second new cooperation we established is about processing of 3D objects from airports. We are currently in the process of negotiating two more new collaborations. At the moment, it looks like a very productive summer season in Fanatic Games as we are currently working with more than 20 artists. We are very grateful for all the trust we receive from our clients.

Top Five May News

Every month in the gaming industry is very productive and the month of May is not an exception. Down below, you can find the five pieces of news we regard the most interesting!

Capcom as announced yet another year of record profits. The publisher reported net sales of whopping $846.3 million and also a record number of games at 36.2 million units. The net sales are in comparison with last fiscal year up by 15.5% while the operating income rose by 24%. Capcom itself claims “record-high profit at all levels.”

CD Projekt RED confirmed that the new Witcher game entered the pre-production. That means that the research phase has been completed and that the team is already looking into how to capitalise development expenses. This is the first Witcher game to be developed with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, and not with the proprietary engine of the Polish company. The release date is far away though, as the estimations are somewhere between 2025 and 2026.

Sony reported that they will conclude the Bungie acquisition by the end of this year. However, this surprising deal will not make Bungie a PlayStation studio and will still be independent in the future. It is great news especially for Xbox players, as Destiny will very likely stay a multiplatform rather than a Sony exclusive.

In late April, Activision Blizzard has announced this year’s Call of Duty. The fans of 2019’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare can be excited about it, as it will be a sequel, Modern Warfare II, which will release on October 28th. Once again we will see Captain John Price and his Taskforce 141, along with Soap MacTavish, Gaz or Ghost.

Take-Two last disclosed sales figures indicate that Grand Theft Auto V has now passed 165 million units sold as of March 31, 2022. The whole GTA series then sold more than 375 million units. Red Dead Redemption 2 is no slouch either, as it sold over 43 million units by the end of February, with the Red Dead series reaching overall sales of 67 million copies.

Statistics and Chart of the Month

If you are interested in numbers, these paragraphs will be special for you. In the picture below, you can find the distribution of video gamers in the United States in 2021. As you can see, almost two fifths are players between 18-34 years of age, followed by 20 % of players below 18.

Loot boxes and game currencies have become a staple in live service games. However, the following chart suggests, at least in North America, a decline in the growth. By 2025, it is estimated that the growth will be only 2.2%, which in comparison with 2021’s 21.6% seems negligible.

Starfield was originally announced for 11th November 2022. In the last weeks though, Bethesda announced the delay until 2023. On Twitter, Jason Schreier suggests he knew all along: „You can just look at what I said last year.“ New release date is yet to be announced.

Number of The Month

There are not many movies based on video games that are very profitable. However, in February, the movie adaption of Uncharted was released and it became hugely popular, making over $400 million since its release.

Released in 2007, Ghost Rider is a third-person hack-and-slash game that was originally released for PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Game Boy Advance. The story is similar to the one of the movie, with a few characters from the comic – such as Scarecrow or Lilith. Interestingly enough, the PSP version of the game features exclusive racing circuit gameplay on which you can race not only as the Ghost Rider, but also as Deathwatch or Caretaker.
