Covid-19 pandemic has started at the end of 2019. Since then, it has influenced every single sector in the world, including the videogaming industry. This article looks into the ways covid has influenced gaming during the last three years and also into one of the secondary effects of the pandemic – the increase of outsourcing demand.

The pandemic has forced people to stay at home, and therefore to look into possibilities to entertain themselves and also to stay in touch with their friends and families. Ironically, in the past, gaming was seen as unsociable and isolating. However, the pandemic proved these stereotypes wrong and painted a different, much more positive picture.
According to a G2A survey, during the first months of the pandemic, over 93% of gamers under the age of 18 admitted that they played games regularly almost every day. What is even more interesting is the 200% increase of gamers over the age of 60, out of which 42% played over 20 hours a week.
Even people without PCs or consoles joined the gaming industry. In 2020, Streamlabs and Stream Hatchet reported that Twitch saw an 83% increase in viewership when the pandemic hit, and that over 5 billion hours of content was viewed in the second quarter of 2020.
A different survey suggests that gaming extended even outside of our living rooms and bedrooms – to classrooms. Almost half of the teachers in the UK and the US tried to use gaming as an education tool during distance learning. Contrary to the popular belief, gaming is not a hurdle when it comes to education. There are several video games that even have a special mode to educate, such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and its discovery tour that takes you to Ancient Greece.
As more people started playing video games, the demand on games increased and gaming companies were motivated to create more of them. Since many employees of development studios were forced to stay at home and either could not work at all or could work just partially, the demand for external services in the form of outsourcing increased, including the 3D art. Outsourcing studios therefore were more in demand, which is still the case even in 2022.
